Credit scores, funding, and your next step: a practical guide for small businesses

So many of the founders we meet are brilliant at what they do, but feel stuck with money admin. If your credit score is low or your borrowing history is thin, it can feel like doors are closed. The good news is, there are steps you can take to build a healthier record, protect your business, and find fair finance that doesn’t trap you in high fees- all actions that can help you to sustain or grow a healthy and successful business.

First, understand your credit record

In the UK, the three main credit reference agencies are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Lenders may check one, two, or all three. You have a legal right to a free statutory credit report from each agency, so request all three and look for mistakes or gaps. (ICO)

Why does this matter? your credit record shows how you manage bills, credit cards, loans, phone contracts, and more. Good habits over time can make borrowing cheaper- poor credit means less options and higher lending costs. MoneyHelper explains what affects your score and how to improve it in plain language. (MaPS)

Five practical steps to build or repair your score

1) Check and correct your files
Read every section of your statutory reports. If something is wrong, raise a dispute with the agency and the lender. Keep notes and evidence. MoneyHelper sets out how to check and challenge entries, step by step. (MaPS)

2) Register to vote at your current address
Being on the electoral register helps lenders confirm your identity, which can support your score. If you move, update your registration. Experian explains how electoral roll data appears in your report and why it helps. (Experian)

3) Pay on time, every time
Set up small, affordable direct debits for essential bills so you never miss a payment. Even one late payment can sit on your file for years and may affect lending decisions. MoneyHelper’s tips on steady repayment habits are useful here. (MaPS)

4) Keep balances low and avoid too many applications
Aim to use a lower share of your available credit limit, and space out new applications to avoid multiple hard searches in a short period. MoneyHelper covers both points clearly. (MaPS)

5) Get free, specialist debt advice if you are struggling
If cash flow is tight or arrears are building, speak to Business Debtline. It is the UK’s free, dedicated debt advice service for self-employed people and small business owners, run by the Money Advice Trust. (Money Advice Trust)

Funding options that do not pile on charges

When credit is thin or damaged, high-cost lenders can look tempting. Please pause and try these safer routes first.

Start Up Loans

Government-backed personal loans for business purposes. Borrow £500 to £25,000 at a fixed interest rate of 6% per year. Repay over 1 to 5 years. You get free application support and up to 12 months of mentoring if approved. If there are business partners, each can apply for up to £25,000, up to a total of £100,000 per business. There are no arrangement or early repayment fees. (GOV.UK)

Responsible Finance lenders, also called Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs)

Not-for-profit lenders that look at the whole picture and offer hands-on support. Many work with people who have been declined elsewhere. You can search for providers via Responsible Finance, and the British Business Bank lists CDFI options supported under its programmes. (responsiblefinance.org.uk)
