One entrepreneur who shows this in action is Kadem Smith, founder of Mr D Woolens in Peckham. His journey shows how determination, patience, and community can grow a small idea into something people value and communities need.
Kadem learned to knit as a child. What began as a quiet hobby became a way to bring people together. With handmade woollens, relaxed workshops, and friendly market stalls, he has built more than a shop. He has created a space where you feel welcome and encouraged.
A personal word from Kadem
“Hi community, this is me, Kadem, from Mr D Woolens. I’m asking my family, friends, community groups, charities, and organisations who know me or my work to share your thoughts on my little independent pop up unit in the Rye Lane indoor market, Peckham. My one year lease ends on 25 October 2025, and I’m not sure whether to extend for six months or a year, or end it and go back to street trading. This space is my safe place to make and to run crochet and knitting workshops, but things haven’t gone to plan. I don’t have council support or funding, so I’m covering costs from my own income. If I do extend, the workshop role I do elsewhere may have to stop so I can focus on my business and the premises. I’m a young Black business owner, autistic and dyslexic. Please visit the unit, talk with me, share ideas, join a workshop, or buy something if you can. Your support will help me decide what to do on 25 October 2025.”
What you’ll find at Mr D Woolens
In a Mr D Woolens workshop, no one rushes you. If you’re new to knitting, you get patient guidance. If you’re picking it up again, you get room to grow. Confidence builds one stitch at a time. You’ll find hats, scarves, bags, blankets, and baby knits. Every piece is handmade and carefully finished, with care you can see and feel. If you want to learn, slow down, or make something you’re proud of, join a workshop or stop by the stall.
A new chapter ahead
As we approach the end of October, there may be changes to Kadem’s current unit, and plans are still taking shape. What is definite is his commitment to teaching, making, and serving the community. You’ll still be able to book him for a workshop and find him at markets across South London.
