June 2022 Newsletter

Well, hello from a sweltering London. It is quite a change after the energy and vibrancy that May seemed to contain – everything seems to take so much more energy and is certainly best done at a slower pace! It makes me think that perhaps nature in its own way gives us cues as to how we should conduct our own lives and to that end I am feeling that this month has been an opportunity to rest and reset.

We’ve all been charging through this year – and why wouldn’t we. This is our first full year (!!!) post pandemic, and we all feel there is so much lost time to make up for, but, sometimes there is great value in resting. Stopping fully what you are doing, taking stock of what you’ve achieved and then actually enjoy and appreciate those achievements. Do whatever it is that you find restful – whether it’s leaving your phone on silent for a day, going for a long walk, reading that book, or maybe even going camping. Think of it as an investment in you- and you are what makes your business so is there any better investment? Before the summer holidays are fully upon us, schedule in some much-needed time for YOU, I will that’s for sure.

Despite the heat all of us at Tree Shepherd have been busy working in the community in all manner of ways. We finished off the Employ Yourself course and to say it was a success would be a massive understatement, no matter how many courses we run we never cease to be amazed by the talent, creativity and determination of our graduates. We have written a blog piece about it this month and you can read it here.

Did you know that we have a resources section on our website?  We recognise that many people find it easier to be able to go to one trusted source for help and advice – and that is exactly what our resource page will offer. Over the coming months and beyond we will be uploading anything that we believe can support our clients along their entrepreneurial journey. Watch this space – and of course share with anyone you know who may benefit from this service.

We announced our partnership with the British Business bank start-up loan programme. We have heard countless times from our clients that access to cash for their businesses is a real stumbling block. These loans are the perfect complement to our training and support services. We have written about the service this month in one of our blogs and you can read more about them here. You can also find out more and register for a loan by following this link.

Looking ahead to July, we have the Thrive market outside the Range in Surrey Quays Market on Saturday July 2nd. This will not only be an excellent opportunity for some of our local traders, we are also pleased to say that our Employ Yourself graduates will be attending and talking to the public about their proposed businesses, but will no doubt also be happy to chat about their experience on the course.

We are finalising the details of another pop-up shop in Brixton. The last one was such a success, and we are certain that this one will be too.

Registration is open for our Start Your Own Enterprise course to be held at POP Brixton. This is a 6 week course delivered in partnership with the Walcott Foundation and is for individuals between the ages of 18-30, are Lambeth residents and are either unemployed, on zero hours contracts or are on a low wage. If this is you-or if you know someone who could benefit from this free course then please reach out to one of us and we will be happy to discuss it with you.

Last but certainly not least is our legal toolkit handover. We are anticipating that the Queen Mary students will be presenting our clients with the toolkit that they have been so diligently working on together. Again, we are delighted that we have been able to work together on this and will be sharing more details on our social media channels once the date has been agreed.

British Business Bank start-up loan scheme

The scheme is set up to support those who are starting a business or who have been trading for less than 36 months. The scheme is government backed and comes with a whole package of support – something we know that is as handy as the cash when you are just starting out. You can read it here
