Tree Shepherd is more than the founders we support. It’s the people behind the scenes who make that support possible, and this month we’re turning the spotlight on them.
First up is Jamie-Lee, Thrive’s Workspace Coordinator and Market Operator. She’s been part of the Tree Shepherd team for five years, keeping our Surrey Quays workspace running day to day and pulling together every Thrive Market along the way. Here’s what she had to say.
1.What’s your name, your role at Tree Shepherd, and how long have you been part of the team?
My name is Jamie-Lee, and I’m Thrive’s Workspace Coordinator and Market Operator. I’ve been part of the Tree Shepherd team for five years.
2. In one sentence, what does your job actually involve day to day?
No two days are the same! I support our clients, manage our meanwhile workspace at Surrey Quays, Canada Water ensure the building is clean, welcoming and ready for work each day, and make sure our members have everything they need to thrive.
3. What’s the bit of your job most people wouldn’t guess you do?
I organise, coordinate and oversee the Thrive Markets, which take place every other Saturday, working closely with traders to ensure each market runs smoothly.
Books or movies?
Definitely movies – you can’t beat Toy Story or Grease!
5. Night owl or early lark?
I used to be a night owl, but since becoming a mum, I’m definitely an early lark.
6. Tea or coffee to get you through the day?
Coffee, every time!
7. Best free thing to do in London this summer?
I’d recommend visiting the Rotherhithe Festival or the Bermondsey Carnival, or simply taking a relaxing walk around the marina and enjoying the riverside views.
8. One South London spot you always recommend to people?
Either the Old Salt Quay or the Mayflower Pub. They’re both fantastic places to enjoy a bite to eat or a drink while taking in the beautiful views of the River Thames.
9. What does a typical August day look like for you right now?
August is all about juggling work while trying to find childcare. Every day is a balancing act, making sure I can support our clients while also being there for my son during the school holidays.
10. Your favourite thing to do with the kids in London when the sun’s out?
Packing a picnic and heading to the park, followed by a bike or scooter ride in the evening once it’s cooled down.
11. And the thing you secretly dread doing with them on repeat?
Trying to keep my son entertained all day! It definitely takes a lot of energy and creativity.
12. How does juggling your own summer help you understand what traders are going through with theirs?
It gives me a real appreciation of the challenges many of our traders face. Balancing work with childcare during the summer holidays isn’t easy, so I understand the importance of being flexible, supportive and making the most of every opportunity to work while managing family commitments.
13. Summer changes things for traders, from footfall to childcare to just having the headspace to plan ahead. What does your support look like for them in August specifically?
August can be a challenging month, so I try to be as available as possible. Whether it’s answering questions, helping them find opportunities, or simply being there when they need support, I want our traders to know they can always reach out.
14. What’s a small thing you’ve done for a trader recently that they might not even realise made a difference?
Sometimes it’s the little things that have the biggest impact—checking in with a trader who seems to be having a tough day, helping them promote their business, or taking the time to solve a problem before it becomes a bigger issue. Those small acts of support can really help someone feel valued.
15. What’s the most rewarding part of keeping things running when everyone else’s summer gets a bit wobbly?
Seeing our traders continue to grow and succeed, even during a quieter and more challenging time of year. Knowing that the support we provide helps make things a little easier, and seeing people leave with a smile after a good day, makes it all worthwhile.
16. What’s one thing you wish people knew about what you do at Tree Shepherd?
That every day is different! A lot of what I do happens behind the scenes to keep our workspaces and markets running smoothly. It’s all about supporting our clients, solving problems, and helping people and businesses thrive.
