Nkiruka Design Partnership

Nkiruka is a creative fashion, arts and textiles design partnership based in South London. Their work focuses on the textiles, arts and crafts of the African continent and their designs aim to transform and share these ‘textiles and crafts of culture’ whilst at the same time cherishing their history, the artistry of their creators and the stories, traditions and values that they represent.  At Nkiruka, they believe that in order for these fabrics and crafts to live, they must be translated into uses that are suitable for modern lives, new audiences, markets and consumers.

The word ‘Nkiruka’ (pronounced ‘N-key-ru-ka’) comes from the Nigerian Igbo language and means, ‘the best is yet to come’.

Nkiruka produces clothing (tops, summer dresses, jackets), accessories (clutches, head scarves, tote bags, fabric jewellery), home furnishings (cushions, lampshades, fabric squares for quilting) and artwork using traditional African wax prints, tie dye and batik fabrics made by local artisans and women’s cooperatives in West Africa. They support the local by going global. They also use these fabrics to re-upholster and renew discarded deck chairs and director’s chairs to produce vibrant and colourful pieces.
