Simple marketing ideas for early-stage businesses

If marketing feels like a second full-time job, the honest truth is you’re probably trying to do too much.

Most early-stage businesses don’t need a strategy that fills a whiteboard, a content calendar mapped to the end of the year, or a brand book in three colours. What they need is a clear message, placed where the right people are already looking, and repeated often enough that it starts to land. That’s it.

Here are five marketing ideas that fit around a real life and a real business. Pick one, try it for a month, then come back and pick another. Compounding beats overhaul every time.

Get your one sentence right

Before anything else, write down what you do in a single sentence that explains what you sell, who you sell it to, and why someone would choose you over the next option. This isn’t a tagline or a mission statement, it’s the working sentence that sits underneath every caption, email, market stall sign and conversation you have for the next year.

If you can’t get it down to one sentence, your marketing will struggle, because customers, funders and even the people closest to you will end up guessing. Spend a proper afternoon on this, write five versions, read them aloud, and keep the one that sounds like you on a good day.

Pick one platform and ignore the rest

The only question worth asking is where your customer already spends their time, and once you know the answer, that’s the platform you commit to until it starts working for you. Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, a local WhatsApp group, the noticeboard in the café two doors down, it really doesn’t matter which one, as long as it’s the place your people are.

If you’re not sure, ask three customers, or three people who fit the profile of your ideal customer, and trust what they tell you over anything you might read in a guide.

Show up where your customer is in person

Online marketing gets most of the attention, but face-to-face is still one of the fastest ways to test a message, learn what your customers actually respond to, and build the kind of trust that turns a one-off buyer into a regular. Markets, meetups, school gates, local events and neighbourhood gatherings still move products and book services, often faster than a paid ad ever will.

Trading at Thrive Market in Surrey Quays is one of the most direct ways we see founders sharpen their pitch and meet customers without an algorithm in the way, because there’s nothing between you and the person reaching into their pocket but a real conversation.

Use what you’ve already got

Most founders sit on more marketing material than they realise: old customer reviews, a kind email from someone who bought from you twice, photos from a market stall, a screenshot of a thank-you message, a quote from a friend who became a paying customer. These are all assets, and you don’t need a photoshoot or a fresh brand to start using them.

Pull together five things you already have, work them across your channels over the next month, and pay attention to what people actually respond to. The answers are usually hiding in plain sight.

Talk to one person at a time

The best marketing copy sounds like a real person speaking to one customer rather than a brand shouting at a crowd, and the easiest test for whether you’ve got there is to read your captions, emails and posts aloud before you publish them. If it sounds like a press release or a corporate update, it needs another pass; if it sounds like you talking to a customer over the counter, you’re almost there.

Where to go from here

Marketing isn’t a one-time fix, it’s a habit you build slowly, and picking one of these ideas, sticking with it for a month, and seeing what happens will teach you more than any guide ever could.
