Spotlight: Tiago Lourenço, Founder of Structured PM
Your Story
Please introduce yourself and Structured PM in a sentence or two.
I’m Tiago Lourenço, Founder of Structured PM. I help small and growing businesses simplify GDPR and project delivery so they can operate with confidence and scale without chaos.
What led you to make GDPR your focus? Was there a turning point
I was asked to lead GDPR compliance for a multinational hotel brand and built the framework end to end. I interviewed department leads, mapped data flows, wrote policies and SOPs, and trained staff. That model became the standard across all their properties worldwide.
Seeing the impact changed my direction. When GDPR is clear and practical, it does not slow a business down; it strengthens it. That experience shaped Structured PM’s approach today: make compliance simple, repeatable, and easy for teams to understand and use.
What’s something most small businesses don’t realise about GDPR?
Many think GDPR is mostly legal paperwork or something to worry about later. In reality, it is about daily habits. If you start early with simple routines, like knowing what data you collect, where it lives, and when to delete it, you avoid most of the risk. Compliance is not about being perfect. It is about being organised, transparent, and consistent. Even an email or WhatsApp exchange with a client sits under GDPR.
Building Structured PM
What kind of businesses do you work with, and what are they worried about?
I mostly support small to mid-sized service businesses and early-stage tech companies. Top concerns include getting it wrong, fines, and appearing untrustworthy to clients. Many do not know where to start. Some assume GDPR does not apply to them.
Describe a typical week. What is keeping you busiest right now?
My week splits between delivery and building the business. On delivery, I review client data flows, run workshops, refine policies, and train teams so GDPR feels practical. On the business side, I develop methodology, improve internal systems, manage proposals, meet partners, and keep the pipeline moving.
It is a balance between working in the business and working on it. Each week I focus on whatever drives clarity, momentum, and consistent results.
Share a challenge you hit while growing Structured PM, and how you worked through it.
At first, I tried to offer everything. Lots of services and shifting strategies meant no focus, no clear message, and no clients in the first year. I kept showing up, sharing value, growing my network, and listening to what founders actually needed.
I then narrowed to three core offerings: a productised GDPR model, Fractional Project Management, and Business Process Documentation. I defined the outcomes clients want, like clarity, confidence, and operational structure. I am not at steady yet, but the pipeline is growing, and there is progress every week.
Tell us about a client transformation you are proud of.
One founder was sure GDPR would slow them down. We implemented a lightweight privacy framework, trained the team, and aligned processes. They became compliant and won a contract because the client valued their clear, responsible data practices.
Rethinking GDPR
How can GDPR be a growth lever rather than red tape?
When you can show responsible data handling, larger clients feel safe choosing you. It can be the difference between being considered and making the shortlist. Several clients reached out after prospects flagged gaps in their GDPR. People are paying attention, even if they do not always say it.
Common GDPR myths vs. the truth
- Myth: GDPR is only for large companies.
Truth: If you collect customer or employee data, it applies. - Myth: GDPR is all legal paperwork.
Truth: Most issues are operational, like how data is stored, shared, and deleted. - Myth: GDPR slows everything down.
Truth: When embedded properly, it speeds up onboarding, reduces errors, and builds trust.
GDPR compliance builds governance, so you solve two problems at once.
One simple action a founder can take this week
Ask this before collecting any data: Do we need it, and do we explain why? That single question improves transparency and reduces risk.
Partnering with Tree Shepherd
You will be leading a GDPR review for Tree Shepherd. What is the approach, and what do you hope it unlocks
We will start with a clear baseline: what data you collect, why you collect it, where it is stored, and who has access. This Data Mapping and RoPA foundation guides everything else. From there, we will create simple, repeatable processes your team can maintain. We will review and update documentation and policies, both internal and client-facing. The goal is clarity, confidence, and habits that stick.
What day-to-day habits should we embed as a community leader?
Document decisions. Keep access strictly need-to-know. Remove information when it is no longer required. Be open about how data is used. Maintain simple SOPs for your processes and for handling data requests. Small daily practices cut risk and build trust over time.
Looking Ahead
What are the next milestones for Structured PM?
Scaling the GDPR StepWise™ 10-step Productised Compliance Model so it is recognised as the go-to for small and scaling businesses. It is built for inconsistent cash flow and the reality that compliance is not optional.
Any workshops, tools, or collaborations coming up
No scheduled sessions yet. I am open to collaborations, workshops, and webinars. I am also building the internal tools that let me serve multiple clients at once.
